One Life. Many Horizons. Multi-Layered Vision.
INTRODUCTION
Filip Firlefijn (born 1979 in Wilrijk, Belgium) is a Belgian writer, multidisciplinary artist, photographer, and independent researcher based in Switzerland. His work moves between literature, philosophy, cultural history, visual art, photography, film, and speculative research, with a recurring interest in consciousness, perception, symbolic form, human development, and the ways in which knowledge is shaped across disciplines.
Firlefijn attended the same secondary school as the Flemish novelist Ernest Claes and, like him, subsequently studied Germanic Languages and Literature at the University of Leuven, graduating from KU Leuven in 2005 with a master's degree in Dutch and English Literature. The university belongs to an intellectual tradition dating back to 1425, with historical students including the pioneering anatomist and physician Andreas Vesalius, the geographer, cosmographer and cartographer Gerardus Mercator, the philologist, philosopher and humanist Justus Lipsius, and Georges Lemaître, whose groundbreaking cosmological research contributed to the foundations of modern Big Bang theory. Lipsius and Lemaître also served as professors in Leuven, while Desiderius Erasmus played a formative role in the university's intellectual history through his involvement in establishing the celebrated Collegium Trilingue.
This rich scholarly heritage resonates with Firlefijn's own intellectual interests. His academic formation extended beyond literary studies to philosophy of art, art criticism, film history, art history, ethics, philosophical anthropology, psychology, Egyptology, construction-related subjects, and broader historical studies. This deliberately wide-ranging intellectual background continues to inform a practice in which literary analysis, visual thinking, historical research, and conceptual experimentation frequently intersect.
Firlefijn also sees the possibility of a new Renaissance emerging from the increasingly interconnected world and advances in technologies such as nanotechnology and artificial intelligence, provided these developments are approached with sufficient responsibility, critical reflection, and human understanding. In his view, such a renewal would not simply represent technological progress, but could offer an opportunity to reconsider some of the fundamental uncertainties and contradictions that have shaped modern civilization: the devastation of two World Wars, recurring economic failures, existential disorientation, and crises concerning the foundations, applications, and limits of scientific knowledge itself. Rather than treating the divisions between science, the humanities, technology, and artistic creation as permanent boundaries, he considers their renewed interaction a potential source of cultural and intellectual transformation.
A central part of Firlefijn’s current work is The Spiral of Consciousness, an extensive philosophical and cultural series examining the development of consciousness through myth, religion, geometry, power, language, science, social organization, and changing forms of human self-understanding. Conceived as a twenty-book series, the project combines historical inquiry with philosophical reflection and an evolving theory of consciousness as a process shaped by tension, contradiction, adaptation, and transformation. Several volumes have now reached publication-ready form, while the larger series remains under development.
Alongside this work, he has developed an extensive literary research project around the poetry of Charles Ducal. Beginning from close reading, the project has grown into a multi-volume investigation of poetic structure, geometry, number, symbolism, voice, cultural memory, and what Firlefijn describes as shifting architectures of resonance. The research combines detailed textual analysis with broader questions concerning language, perception, form, and the limits of interpretation.
His more recent writing also includes TIKNA, a speculative research series exploring possible future relationships between biology, medicine, engineering, artificial intelligence, and human resilience. Rather than presenting technological prediction as certainty, the project investigates what might become biologically meaningful, experimentally testable, or conceptually useful when present-day scientific knowledge is extended toward future possibilities.
Film and narrative writing form another important strand of his practice. His screenplays and adaptations include Boon St., Here and Now, The Insult / L’Insulte, Providence, and other projects situated between psychological drama, cultural observation, and experimental narrative structures. From the outset, Firlefijn approached screenwriting not merely as a literary undertaking, but also from the perspective of a prospective film director, imagining how narrative, performance, visual composition, atmosphere, and cinematic rhythm might come together on screen. His experience in photography, portraiture, lighting, and visual design provides a natural foundation for this approach, informing his understanding of framing, spatial relationships, and the expressive possibilities of moving images. For Boon St., his creative development extended even to musical ideas, reflecting an interest in the interaction between image, sound, and dramatic experience. Although his film projects remain open to collaboration with established directors and production companies, their development has consistently been guided by an integrated artistic vision. Several privately published works, including Boon St. and Here and Now, are archived in the libraries of KU Leuven.
Firlefijn’s visual work encompasses large-scale portraiture, drawing, photography, digital imagery, and design. His photographic background began with analogue photography in Leuven and developed through street, portrait, fashion, and art photography. Across these media, he remains interested less in maintaining a single recognizable style than in finding the form appropriate to a particular idea, image, or problem.
His professional life has followed an equally varied trajectory. In Belgium and Switzerland he has worked in hospitality, sales, retail management, consulting, customer service, administration, and project development, including positions as branch manager and deputy manager. Until March 2026, he also served on the board of the Volkshochschule Interlaken und Umgebung and contributed to its educational activities.
The diversity of these experiences is not separate from his creative work. It has reinforced an approach in which intellectual speculation remains connected to ordinary environments, institutions, technologies, labour, and lived experience. Across writing, research, image-making, and film, Firlefijn’s work asks how apparently separate fields may illuminate one another—and how new forms of understanding can emerge when established boundaries are treated not as endpoints, but as places from which to think further.
